Ok, the ...Short is cool, Robbie. It is a good end.

Ok, the contest. So many good ideas already!
Well, Linda's waltz sounds like a wizard remake of Fantasia -- quite a vision. Don't tell the management about the self playing instruments; it'll give them ideas...
And as for greyniffler; of course Mssr S-S put Dance Macabre into the 'skeleton" music because he thought it was being over-played, and therefore becoming dinosaur like. What he didn't know what that it was mainly wizard folk who were buying the concert tickets.
Well, I think I'll throw my lot in with Sir Read. I agree that Spanky is the best to go after a Djinn. But I think Harvey should force O'Modo to help. She's smart and resourceful and I was enjoying her reparte with the others. I'm not sure how Spanky will feel about this, as she'll do her best to get around the ring constraints, but he'll need backup.

The Mooncalf dance has been a subject of interest to me too. Why not a square dance? But they are shy and don't want to be seen, so it's all very quite. The 4/4 rhythm all comes from their floppy big feet plopping on the dried grain stalks (the only known creature born with a natural 4 beat gate.)
The tune is played by a porlock, a similarly shy beast, on a paper comb or a mouth harp. (Later the porlock will spread about the mooncalf dung to improve the grass for his horses.) The calls are in mooncalf, which is a mostly vowel language (like mumbled Hawaiian) and pitch inflected.
A muggle or unschooled wizard who hears it thinks its raining out in the field (footfalls) and the wind is getting up (comb music) and runs back home to keep dry.TWZRDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12169033110387022829noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8998075323382223363.post-60760733695246231962010-03-29T19:12:45.893-07:002010-03-29T19:12:45.893-07:00I'm sorry this was such a short chapter. I had plans for a scene in which Merlin & Miss P. run at "turbo-gum" speed ahead of the tidal wave - I was really pleased with the imagery of a wall of water moving in really slow motion - but when I got to the "Do you chew gum?" line, I realized that it was the perfect ending. Ah, the best-laid plans...RobbieFishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14112535005437118728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8998075323382223363.post-29799812022520089872010-03-27T22:51:37.842-07:002010-03-27T22:51:37.842-07:00Well, if it's centuars doing the Hokey-Pokey, ...Well, if it's centuars doing the Hokey-Pokey, they have four limbs instead of two.greynifflerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02681797294152035949noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8998075323382223363.post-26266239444110330302010-03-27T10:52:09.455-07:002010-03-27T10:52:09.455-07:00Maybe one of the other Harveys could? He later decided the whole thing was a dream, but the experience led him to compose the Danse Macabre and later The Carnival of the Animals, whose later parts include the Danse Macabre theme, played on the xylophone to evoke the image of skeletons dancing.

It's almost certain that even in this age of Lite Music (Guaranteed Less Than 1% Melody) every muggle has heard the great theme from the Danse Macabre, although s/he may not know what it is.

I can't tell you what Saint-Saes saw that night in France or who was dancing to it. It may have been some kind of historical re-enactment or wizarding village dance. Maybe an old school re-union of some kind. Nor can I tell you if it was played with a scordatura tuning. But when he got to bed and fell asleep, he began dreaming, and the first thing he said in the dream was "What a night! I'm glad it's over!"greynifflerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02681797294152035949noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8998075323382223363.post-30274111713243478052010-03-03T17:33:26.112-08:002010-03-03T17:33:26.112-08:00I think Spanky has the most experience chasing dow...I think Spanky has the most experience chasing down djinni.
