Or did it spook him so when he got promoted to DADA prof that he lost his wits?

Could he have been keeping it around for his own reference when teaching, and then some student was sent to straighten up the closet (Maybe a detention assignee?) and put it in with the spare books? But if Snape missed the book, wouldn't he have figured out that either Ron or Harry had it?

Could he have wanted to pass it along to Harry? Or maybe some other student?
Could Dumbledore have instructed him to help Harry learn potions better, and rather than have personal contact, he decided to leave the book? But that would be chancy, as Harry might well turn up with his own book and never see it. And wouldn't Slughorn be a better bet for personal tutoring anyway?
Now there's a mystery!TWZRDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12169033110387022829noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8998075323382223363.post-69177861763202101302010-06-23T09:37:26.638-07:002010-06-23T09:37:26.638-07:00I vote for A or B..

They had used it until the previous winter, so it must have been collapsed sometime after the beginning of winter. It might have been as late as the spring, when Harry and Ron found their way into the Chamber of Secrets and Lockhart's attempted memory charm/curse backfired and brought down the tunnel roof. But I think it happened earlier, after the fiasco of the Dueling Club. Some of the Slytherins took up dueling in the Common Room.

The crowning damage came when Crabbe and Goyle tried to use a super-powered version of the Shield Charm. They both uttered the words together, while right next to each other. As with the Fiendfyre they unleashed what they did not understand.

They were only deafened and dizzied, but everyone else down there was thrown a considerable distance. Had the walls of the room not also been driven back, several of the cracked skulls, damaged backs, and broken bones would have been deaths.

It took Professor Snape's considerable skill to repair the damage and un-curse some of his House members. And the damage radiated for some distance, and collapsed the tunnel from behind the fourth floor, which ran within a dozen yards of the Common Room.

Naturally, they were all sworn to secrecy by Professor Snape, who did not care to have another blot on the Slytherin name.greynifflerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02681797294152035949noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8998075323382223363.post-71643959823389506842010-06-07T03:33:55.874-07:002010-06-07T03:33:55.874-07:00Another "mistake" that comes to mind mig...Another "mistake" that comes to mind might be the general negligence of sending the trio and Malfoy out with Hagrid into the forest to find what's been eating unicorn blood in SS. It isn't like Hagrid pretends not to know that whatever's doing it is a nasty piece of work. Also, you'd think Dumbledore would have suspicions.
I haven't worked that one out, except to say it would have been much more plausible if they had been sent on another errand without the knowledge of the dead Unicorns, or perhaps had wandered off without permission -- which would be at least in character for Harry and Draco.TWZRDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12169033110387022829noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8998075323382223363.post-8110083043468878222010-05-31T04:24:50.203-07:002010-05-31T04:24:50.203-07:00Linda, you weren't the only one to ask that, s...Linda, you weren't the only one to ask that, so Jo actually answers at her website, jkrowling.com. I don't want to forget the details of Joe/Merlin's last appearance.
discrepancy :
I hope this is the sort of thing you are looking for.
One discrepancy that always messed with me is in Book 4. Even though Harry has spent gobs of time learning "accio" to get his broom for the dragon trial, a few months after he can't figure to do the same when he drops the marauders map with his leg stuck in the stair. I suppose we could say it's a typical character flaw of Mr. Potter that he doesn't remember the right thing to do when he should, but still, it seems rather far fetched that he hasn't incorporated such a handy spell into his life.
Of course, if Faux Madeye doesn't get the map, things won't work, but it wouldn't be so hard to fix. Either have his wand stuck in the stair too (That would make him really scarily helpless!) or else have the map enchanted so that he can't get the spell to work, or have Snape show up before he can say the spell, as we know Harry's bad at non-verbals.TWZRDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12169033110387022829noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8998075323382223363.post-61883296030711091412010-05-24T16:22:47.855-07:002010-05-24T16:22:47.855-07:00I vote A, but I have to think about the contest......I vote A, but I have to think about the contest... maybe read up on discrepancies in the Harry Potter books...Emryshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06232567639276230232noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8998075323382223363.post-24509931736154705982010-05-23T21:37:40.934-07:002010-05-23T21:37:40.934-07:00In an eoisode of Babylon 5, Centauri Ambassador Lo...In an eoisode of Babylon 5, Centauri Ambassador Londo Mollari discusses humanity with representatives of the Minbari. "They have composed tremendous operas! Amazing symponies! And what do half of them sing to their children at night? You put your left foot in, you take your left foot out. You put your left foot in ... and that's what it's all about! It means NOTHING! It is madness!" After Mollari leaves, the Minbari's companion says "I thought it was a rather nice tune." "Whatever you do, don't tell him," whispers the first Minbari.greynifflerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02681797294152035949noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8998075323382223363.post-24897720609848636002010-05-23T13:12:54.162-07:002010-05-23T13:12:54.162-07:00I vote A or B. Bottom line: I haven't been blessed with enough free time, including evenings or weekends, to get anything done that didn't absolutely have to be done. I suspect things will ease up a bit for a while...

Meanwhile, if you're interested in the song the (SPOILER WARNING!) djinn was singing, it comes from the top of Act III of Verdi's Falstaff & I thought the words were particularly appropriate to the djinn's situation.
